This week saw the launch of our social media campaign #buskingisnotacrime
Why do it? Well, here’s the purpose of the campaign, and how it is at the root of The Busking Project’s mission.
If “art” were an animal it would be considered an at-risk species. A lack of funding has left the sector crippled. Busking, therefore, should be flourishing in these conditions. It just doesn’t have the same constraints as other art forms. It doesn’t require funding; just give a busker a busy high street and they can bring it to life. This is the beauty of street performance.
So the question must be posed; why are we hearing more stories of busking being criminalized?
The Busking Project’s core goal is to highlight and prevent the tide of draconian legislation that is making spontaneous busking a thing of the past.
This is why we have launched the #buskingisnotacrime campaign. We understand that in a lot of places it isn’t illegal to perform, but “the establishment” is harassing many in our broad church.
This is our first real call to arms.
So if you haven’t already added your photo to the list then please do so and share your stories. Thank you for putting up with the barrage of posts we’ve been writing recently. But, if we all shout together we have a much better chance of being heard.
